Fitchburg began with the Vroman brothers, the first permanent settlers. Dutch immigrants that came to the area to work on the state capital, the brothers began farming and built a residence. Fitchburg separated and became known as the Town of Greenfield, describing the grassy rolling fields around the town. The name was later changed to Fitchburg to avoid confusion with Greenfield’s namesake in Milwaukee County. Largely influenced by early stagecoach routes and railroad stops, Fitchburg grew rapidly into several other areas of settlement.
